This three-day safari is an ideal addition to a Tanzanian or Kenyan holiday. Daily flights are available from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and there are three weekly flights from Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Nairobi/Tanzania – Kigali
Early Morning
Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your guide and transferred to the Virunga Conservation Area, a scenic 2.5-hour drive.
If time permits, you can explore local markets, villages, and communities (at an additional cost) or opt for a visit to the stunning twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo (fees payable directly).
Overnight: Lodge near Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a briefing by the park guides. Here, you’ll learn important guidelines for your trek and how to behave when encountering mountain gorillas.
You’ll then drive over scenic yet mildly bumpy roads to the trailhead, where your trek begins. A short walk through cultivated fields leads to the forest edge, marking the entrance to the park. From here, the gorilla trek begins and may last until midday, depending on where the gorillas are located.
The reward for your efforts is unforgettable: observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is often described as one of the most profound wildlife experiences in the world.
Tips for the trek:
Bring plenty of water.
Pack a good camera with ample memory or film.
Wear waterproof clothing and carry zip-lock bags for your camera and other electronics as rain can occur unexpectedly.
After the trek, enjoy lunch at your lodge before returning to Kigali in the afternoon.
Overnight: Hotel in Kigali
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before being transferred to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
Important Notes:
Once confirmed, gorilla permits are non-refundable and non-changeable.
Correct passport details, including passport numbers, are required to issue gorilla permits.
Gorilla trekking permits cost $1,500 per person per trek.
This short but unforgettable adventure offers a unique opportunity to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural environment, making it an excellent highlight of any East African holiday.
